Lead Mechatronics Engineer – Build High-Performance Robotic Systems for Next-Generation Defense Platforms!

Austin, TX | On-site

Opportunity Summary

A well-funded defense robotics startup in Austin is seeking a Lead Mechatronics Engineer to take ownership of the critical intersection between mechanical systems, electronics, and real-time software control. The team is developing autonomous robotic platforms designed to operate in demanding environments where reliability, speed, and precision are essential. In this role, you will lead the development of motion systems that translate software commands into precise mechanical action. From selecting motors and actuators to tuning control systems and debugging complex integration issues, you will ensure that robotic hardware performs exactly as intended in the field. This is an opportunity to work alongside a small, highly capable engineering team building real systems that move quickly from prototype to deployment.

If you enjoy solving complex motion problems, integrating hardware and software, and building systems that must perform flawlessly under real-world constraints, this role offers a rare opportunity to own a critical piece of a fast-moving robotics platform.

About Us

We are a venture-backed robotics company focused on developing advanced autonomous systems for national security applications. Our technology integrates robotics, AI, embedded computing, and precision electromechanical systems to operate in dynamic environments where speed and reliability matter most. The team combines experienced startup operators, robotics engineers, and mission-driven builders who prioritize field-ready capability and rapid iteration over theoretical research. Our engineering culture emphasizes hands-on development, fast feedback loops, and close collaboration between hardware and software teams.

Job Duties

  • Serve as the technical interface between mechanical, electrical, and robotics engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Define motor and actuator specifications based on system mass, required acceleration, and performance targets
  • Perform calculations related to torque, inertia, and rotational dynamics to support high-speed motion platforms
  • Develop and tune motion control systems, including high-bandwidth PID control loops for precision tracking
  • Translate software commands and perception outputs into reliable real-time actuation
  • Investigate and resolve system issues at the intersection of hardware and software
  • Lead troubleshooting of integrated systems to determine whether root causes originate from mechanical design, electronics, or control software
  • Support integration of robotic subsystems that require precise and responsive motion behavior
  • Collaborate closely with engineers developing perception, control, and embedded systems to ensure coordinated system performance

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience developing mechatronic systems with high-performance motion control
  • Strong background working with motor drivers, actuators, and control systems
  • Proficiency programming in C, C++, or Rust for low-level hardware interaction
  • Ability to analyze mechanical loads and translate them into electrical and control system requirements
  • Hands-on experience using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, CAN analyzers, and similar tools
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging capabilities across mechanical and electrical systems
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to pass a background check

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with robotics middleware such as ROS2, DDS, or similar frameworks
  • Experience with advanced control strategies such as adaptive control or model predictive control
  • Background working with gimbal systems, pan-tilt mechanisms, or other high-speed tracking hardware
  • Prior experience developing robotic or autonomous systems platforms
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
  • Personal interest in robotics, embedded systems, or hardware projects outside of work

Why Join Us

  • Meaningful early equity participation in a fast-growing technology company
  • Opportunity to directly influence product direction and core engineering decisions
  • Mission-driven work focused on solving urgent real-world technical challenges
  • A fully equipped engineering lab designed for rapid prototyping and experimentation
  • Access to advanced hardware platforms including high-performance compute and robotics development tools
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums
  • 50% coverage of healthcare premiums for dependents
  • Unlimited PTO focused on outcomes and flexibility
  • High ownership environment with minimal bureaucracy
  • Austin-based engineering culture centered on in-person collaboration and rapid testing
  • Relocation assistance available for candidates moving to Austin
